Canvas Strap Watches: Everything You Need to Know

After seeing one in is this article from the Londoner (a really decent blog, so be sure to check it out) I have been pretty much obsessed with getting one. However they are harder to find than the more standard leather/metal link watches, and it's even more hard to find a decent guide to them, so here you go:

The canvas strapped watch has a history muddled in both celebrity and the military. The strap actually comes in two varieties the NATO and the Zulu. The NATO is the most popular and definately the better looking than the Zulu yet the Zulu is more robust. They have been popular in both the military and with divers because they minimise the chance of breaking the strap and therefor losing the watch, very practical so far.

It is the latter association with divers that has really led to their popularity as many divers attached a Rolex with a NATO strap. This can even be seen in the first James Bond, Dr. No, on Sean Connery's wrist (see the picture above). Apparently the budget wasn't big enough for a new Rolex so producer Cubby Broccoli lent his canvas strapped Rolex to Connery. And lets face it, don't get cooler than Bond.

The best thing about these watches is that you can change the strap, and you can even put a NATO strap or Zulu strap on a normal wrist watch. Just be careful you get the right size (i.e. 18mm, 20mm, 22mm etc). There are loads of places to get great watch straps, even J Crew do them. I suggest checking out MWC and Twisted Time.

These look great on girls as well as guys, and are a classic and somewhat preppy accessory which is ideal for the summer (if it ever comes).

Here are some of the best from around the internet:

This is the Larsson & Jennings Classic Windsor, an Anglo-Swedish company and my favourite, pick it up for £160.

This is the one off of that Londoner article, also as nice as the Windsor, from Daniel Wellington, £125.

Another idea is to buy a watch and the strap separately. MWC do pretty hardcore, military grade stuff (they even make stab-proof vests) and so these watches will definitely take a beating. So couple one of these watches (£50) with one of these straps (£8.25). Sorted.

On a budget:
The Larsson & Jennnings and Daniel Wellingtons are all very well, but if you're on a budget? Not so much. The best alternative is this River Island watch to be found at ASOS for a pretty much unbeatable £26.

  1. I think what you published was very reasonable.
But, consider this, suppose you were to write a killer post title?
I mean, I don't wish to tell you how to run your website, however suppose you added a headline to maybe grab a person's attention?
I mean "A Guide to Canvas Strap Watches" is kinda plain.
You ought to peek at Yahoo's front page and see how they create post headlines to get viewers to open the links. You might try adding a video or a picture or two to get people excited about what you've
got to say. In my opinion, it could bring your
    website a little livelier.
